Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden

The guide begins by presenting interesting facts about Slovenia’s flora and its distinctive features, focusing primarily on the Slovenian part of the Alps and their foothills, and on the plant life of the Primorska Karst and Slovenian Istria. As the garden is home mainly to alpine and Karst plants, the guide also presents plant adaptations to life in the mountains and on dry Karst meadows. A brief history of botanical research in the Slovenian Alps is also included. The central part of the guide is devoted to the history of the garden, highlighting its founder and his assistants and presenting the role of the garden under the administration of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. It also provides key information on Juliana’s role today.

The bulk of the guide comprises a presentation of the plant species that grow in Juliana. The plants are arranged according to the colour of their flowers or inflorescences. For each plant, the guide specifies the altitudinal zone and habitat in which it grows, its distribution within Slovenia and worldwide, its approximate height and flowering period, as well as an interesting feature or a similar species with which it may be confused. The family to which it belongs according to current taxonomy is listed, along with its Latin name and synonyms, and it is also indicated whether the species is protected in Slovenia or listed on the Red List. Photographs illustrate the plant’s habit and its flowers, and in some cases a photograph of its fruits or of a similar species is also included. In the index, species are listed by their Slovene and Latin names.
