Geodiversity in Museum Collections

Every year at the beginning of October, we celebrate Geodiversity Day. Its purpose is to highlight the importance of diverse geological, geomorphological and hydrological formations for our society. Raising awareness of geological forms and processes helps to preserve them.

The Natural History Museum of Slovenia’s mission is to help preserve geodiversity in Slovenia by collecting, documenting and storing a wide variety of geological specimens. The museum keeps unique samples of fossilized remains of the first described members of already extinct species (fossil holotypes), various minerals from prominent sites and even extraordinary samples of meteorites. The museum’s geologists and paleontologists also research, study and record diverse geological phenomena. The aim of this glass display is to present at least part of Slovenia’s rich geodiversity.

The exhibition will be on display from October 6 to December 31, 2023, in the Natural History Museum of Slovenia.
