The Slovenian Museum of Natural History is preserving, studying and interpreting tangible and intangible heritage of natural origin, and biodiversity. The Museum is substantiated by zoological, botanical and geological collections, which are regularly supplemented in compliance with the collection policy.

The collection policy of the Museum, as of the national treasure of biodiversity and geological heritage of the Republic of Slovenia, obliges us to systematically collect cultural heritage of natural origin, particularly within the territory of Slovenia. Apart from cultural heritage of natural origin from our territory, the Museum also collects material of extreme importance for the Slovenian territory or for the movable heritage of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History for professional, scientific, cultural or historical purposes.

Study collections

In the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, the documentation and digitization of objects from the exhibition and study collections are carried out with outmost concentration and effort. For this activity, the Galis Document Management System is used from the firm Semantika d.o.o.

In addition, Galis enables us to display selected museum objects on the World Wide Web, both on the Museum’s home page and Museums.si.
