The Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026! The garden was founded in 1926 by Albert Bois de Chesne (1871–1953), a mountaineer, botanist and timber merchant who was also a close friend of Julius Kugy. After the Second World War, the garden was preserved for future generations thanks to the dedication of Slovenian naturalists. Since 1962, it has been managed by the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. From 1 May to 30 September, visitors can explore its living collection of plants native to Slovenia, particularly those characteristic of the Alpine and Karst regions.

The exhibition Juliana – A Blooming Classroom of Nature explores the origins of alpine botanical gardens and the history of Slovenia’s oldest alpine botanical garden. It also highlights the garden’s important role in nature conservation and education, while revealing fascinating stories about the plants and animals that can be found there. Visitors can listen to sounds recorded in Juliana, smell essential oils extracted from plants and even touch some of the plants themselves. The exhibition offers an opportunity to experience Juliana through all the senses.
