For a long time, the Carinthian region was not recognised as being rich in fossils. In fact, only Triassic gastropods from Peca were known, later joined by ammonites. There are also not many fossil collectors in the area, as most of the minerals were collected due to the Mežica mine.

Over the years, I have amassed a diverse collection of fossils, ranging in age from 230 to 16 million years. Notable specimens include Cretaceous rudist shells, large and diverse fossil gastropods, ammonites and corals. I systematically explore Uršlja Gora and its slopes, and the western part of Pohorje is also of paleontological interest.

In any case, collecting fossils is an interesting activity combining knowledge of history and geology with hiking and enjoying the outdoors, and I would recommend it to others. Even now, I shudder when I pick up a fossil specimen that is millions of years old — a remnant of a former living being. Think about it. It lay there for millions of years, and yet fate brought us together.
