Eggs, nests, birds …

On occasion of the Easter holidays, we present some of the egg, nest and bird specimens held in the ornithological collection of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. The entire collection currently includes 239 bird nests, and 1482 inventory units of bird eggs (each unit can contain between 1 and 14 eggs).

Broad-tooth mako from the Miocene

Across Slovenia and also Europe, tooth remains from extinct species of sharks are found fairly commonly. Among the largest ever found in Slovenia are the teeth of the broad-tooth mako (Carcharodon hastalis), which were dug up from the Miocene layers in Zasavje and Dolenjsko.
